Congratulations to Business Teams selected for Business Development Funding
The Change Game Team Members: Marlo Rencher Charles Rencher Cornelius Sims Denise White-Perkins Jambony Jarju
The Change Game is an innovative approach to motivate African-American males to better health through the integration of gaming, competition and physical activity. The Internet-based, multiplayer social game delivers low-verbal, action-oriented health coaching in a game format. It uses avatars which change in appearance and compete better when the player has completed real-world health-oriented activities (e.g., walking, running, working out). The Change Game applies a “freemium” strategy, which is an innovative strategy used in Internet-based gaming.
En Garde! Detroit Team Members: Bobby Smith David Johnson John Allen Richard Noto Quentin Love
En Garde! Detroit is a youth development company that innovatively links the sport of fencing to improved academic performance through customized after-school and community programs. The social enterprise is designed to address both the health and education epidemics in low-wealth communities through linking physical activity and competency development in S.T.E.M. (science, technology, engineering and math). The business is focused on producing college-ready high school graduates who are financially literate, healthy and S.T.E.M. enriched, while remaining highly profitable.
Healthy Dollar Team Members: Kathy Jackson Dennis Jackson Lorraine Carnes Marcus Davis
Healthy Dollar will create a hub for health in the city of Flint by providing access to low-cost fresh fruits and vegetables and a setting for health education and community health events. The store will have a focus on local produce as well provide a venue for locally produced products. The store is strategically located, with easy access from a bus station (where 20,000 people flow through a year) and for the 20,000+ college students living in or near downtown Flint.
Home Court Advantage Team Members: Nicole Spencer Terri Finnie Doreen Bethel Reco Spencer
Home Court Advantage will utilize organized sports and community-led activity programs to promote healthy development of youth. Kids in economically challenged communities do not have the opportunities to engage in sports that exist for most kids. Home Court Advantage has developed an innovative business model that leverages community sponsorship, tournament revenues and City of Detroit relationships to build a sustainable business.
Virtual Holistics Organization (VHO) Team Members: Margaret Betts, M.D. Corey Collins, Pharm.D. Gwenesia Collins, Pharm.D. Bellandra Foster, Ph.D., P.E. Paula Green-Smith, M.A. Philip Hamilton, B.S. Yolanda Holder, J.D. Richard King Jr., MBA
Virtual Holistics will leverage community engagement and innovative health “pods” to overcome the cultural barriers to engaging in preventative health screenings and provide for access to trusted community care providers.
